Former European Champion Martin Strobel ended his career one day after the early end of the handball season after 17 professional years. The Swabian newspaper said the German league player HBW Balingen-Weilstetten on Wednesday: “Today is definitely the day my gambling career ends.”
Strobel again and again the experts attested a great potential, but injuries slowed down the 33-year-old. The right hand finished 147 country games (168 goals) for the selection of the German Handball Federation (DHB).
2016 he won with the DHB team in addition to EM gold also Olympic bronze in Rio de Janeiro. At the Heim-WM last year Strobel suffered a cross and inner band tear in his left knee, only in November he returned to the cadre of his club.
After his return Strobel was suddenly again considered a candidate for the national team. At the new Bundestrainer Alfred Gislason, he was on the note for the Olympic Qualifications Tournament in April, which was cancelled due to the Corona pandemic.
Strobel would also have been an option for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, but these were then moved to the 2021-year. I would certainly have been working on a comeback and in that case I would certainly have had some other thoughts, but that is gambling,”he told the paper.
