Fed-Cup player Laura Siegemund reached the eighth final in Melbourne on her return to the tennis court after a 14-day Corona quarantine and faces a real hardness test.
32-year-old Metzingen won her second-round match against Australian Wildcard player Destanee Aiava sovereign 6:2, 6:2. The next opponent is the top-ranking Romanian Simona Halep, the number two in the world.
Siegemund is the last remaining German at the Hartplatz tournament around the Gippsland Trophy. On Monday, Darmstadt winner Andrea Petkovic was eliminated in round two against Ukraine’s number three Ukrainian Jelena Switolina.
In the eighth finals, US Open winner Naomi Osaka also stands. The Japanese woman in number two won against the French woman Alize Cornet with 6:2, 6:2 and now plays Katie Boulder. The British had previously won against US hope Cori Gauff 3:6, 7:5, 6:2.
